Not Your Antique Model Steam Engines Anymore!
Remember when you were a little kid and all you wanted to do was to build a model airplane or model car with that unique kit that you saw your older brother making? Remember when it was rainy outside and he was busy building his kit, and you weren’t allowed to get “get too close” and you sat there captivated by what was taking place, as you watched the model he was building start coming to life? Well, you can do that now. Whether you are an adult, a teenager still, or even better, a retiree and have “always wanted to build a model from some kind of kit”! Now is your chance.
There are so many models to choose from. I hope you like what you see on my home page here. After doing some research for me, I thought I would share what I have found with you. The model that I chose is the “Steam Engine Model Kits” that are available online. The reason I chose this model from the rest was just personal, I liked what I saw and wanted to recreate the steam engine model for myself.
I did have some criteria that I wanted to stay within. Some of that were kits of working models. In other words, I wanted a model that would move some of its parts after I finished. I also first started looking at the obvious, that being live steam locomotive building kits. After looking at those, I started seeing other kits that had engines. There were kits for submarine models. I never had thought of making a submarine, maybe this summer when it is warmer and I can go to the small lake we have nearby, I will look at that one again.
Now I know that the models that my brother used to make were plastic and he painted and decaled them. But, since I have more time and a little more money, I decided to build a replica model steam traction engine. I know, you’re probably asking yourself, “What is that?” This was a new term to me; I had not known what a “steam traction engine” was.
Well, here are some pictures of one. Now I have to warn you, this one is quite expensive, but it was exactly what I wanted. After you see the different models that are available at this site, I think you’ll find one that you will want to build, too.
I finished this model. It was truly one of the most fun adventures I had been on for a while. Every day I would get up, go to my hobby room and start “playing” with my imagination of what I wanted to do with that model that day. Anyway, I finished it! It was absolutely the most beautiful “model” I had ever seen. Of course, no bias on my part! I was so proud of that model steam traction engine, and the beauty of it, I gave it to my oldest grandson. He made a special place for it on his fireplace mantel and takes care of it very gently. He has decided that this model that I made is going to be handed down as an heirloom to his children when my grandson decides that it is time to pass it down. I felt a lump in my throat when he told me that. I am so glad that I decided to put so much love and attention to detail into that model. Now I am working on other models, all steam engine with moving parts, for my other three grandchildren. I’m putting just as much love into those as I did my first one. What a great family tradition this has become.
